Society & Culture - Year 12: Cultural Objects

Subject guide to support Year 12 Society & Culture

What is a Cultural Object?

According to Wikipedia's entry on cultural artefacts/artifacts (a more common term for cultural objects) these are objects that "...have significance because they offer an insight into: technological processes, economic development and social structure..." (source)

For the purposes of your task, you could consider one of the following objects and explore the changes that have happened to it over time (the past 30 – 50 years) and how these alterations have both reflected and caused changes in society and culture:

  • Mobile phones
  • Computers
  • Cars
  • Barbie dolls
  • Swimwear (men's & women's)
  • Women’s underwear
  • Shoes
  • Menstrual products
  • Music devices/technology
  • Home entertainment
  • Tattoos
  • Hats

This page of the Society & Culture LibGuide is intended to provide you with a place to start your research on your chosen object - you will need to go beyond what is listed here, and the library staff (Miss Phillips and Ms Lane) are always happy to support you in your search.

Remember that you are looking not just for how the object has changed over time, but also what may have been the major drivers of that change, such as consumerism, technological advances, globalisation, feminism, changes in social structure, changes in culture.
