Science - Year 11: Biology - Multicellular Organisms: Overview

This guide is intended to support Year 11 students with Stage 1 Biology topic, Multicellular Organisms in Semester 2.

From the SACE Documents

In this topic, students

  • examine the structure and function of various multicellular organisms, which could include the investigation of human, other animal, and/or plant systems.

  • examine the hierarchical structure of organisms and look at the arrangement and characteristics of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems.

  • explore the concept of change resulting in cell differentiation and gene expression.

  • consider the structure and function of various organ systems that facilitate the exchange of materials in human beings and other species, including specific attributes of the circulatory, respiratory, excretory, and digestive systems in animals.

  • investigate the factors that affect plant growth and learn about the structure and function of leaves and their role in photosynthesis.

  • develop an understanding of how biotechnology has contributed not only to the understanding of how systems within multicellular organism function together, but also to how it has enabled new development of medical treatments based on genetic factors.

Additionally, by investigating the effects of lifestyle choices, new medical treatments, and organ donation, students extend their ethical understanding and personal and social capability.

Using this LibGuide

As you look through the various resources collected on the pages of this LibGuide, keep an eye out for those resources that have information on more than just one area. It is also important to remember that you need to consider each source critically, as well as an opportunity to build keywords and search terms to conduct further research of your own.
